The pawn
The pawn moves straight and captures diagonally. And it never goes back.
The pawn moves forward, one square. On its very first move — and only then — it may move two. The pawn on e2 marked here can go to e3 or to e4. And there is a rule with no exception: a pawn never moves backwards. Every pawn you push is a road you cannot undo.
Here is the trap that catches everyone starting out: the pawn moves one way and captures another. Moving, it goes straight — from e4 to e5. Capturing, it goes diagonally, one square. The white pawn on e4 can NOT capture anything by going straight; the black pawn on d5 is on its diagonal, and that is the one it can take.
Capture the black pawn with your pawn on e4.
