What each piece is worth
Pawn 1, knight 3, bishop 3, rook 5, queen 9. The king has no price.
Pieces are not worth the same, and that is why “winning a trade” exists. The count everyone uses: a pawn is worth 1, a knight 3, a bishop 3, a rook 5 and the queen 9. The king stays out of it — without him there is no game. It is not a rule of chess, it is a ruler: it lets you decide in two seconds whether a trade favours you.
Two black pieces have no defender at all, and your knight on e4 reaches both: the rook on c5 and the bishop on g5. You only get one.
